How did they make the flax seed oil? When exposed to air it hardens (which is why artists have always used it to make oil based paint-- it is a drying oil after all https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drying_oil). Would be curious to learn how they dealt with this phenomenon

On the other hand, it would seem like the rules about foods were already set in stone by the time Christianity expanded outside the Mediterranean. Perhaps the Church Fathers would have created different policies on these matters if the church started in Russia?
